Problem

Finland's Cold War-era fighter aircraft needed replacement, leading to politically sensitive procurement decision balancing military capability, industrial offsets, and international relations. The F/A-18 Hornet purchase represented major defense investment requiring documentation.

What I Did

Researched F/A-18 Hornet procurement and integration into Finnish Air Force. Documented technical specifications, political considerations, and predecessor aircraft. Chronicled organizational structure and early operational service in Finland.

Impact

Created detailed documentation of significant Finnish defense procurement. Demonstrated research capabilities across technical, political, and military domains. Provided chronicle of Finland's fighter aircraft modernization during 1990s.

Lessons

Military procurement is never just about specifications—it's politics, industrial policy, and international relations wrapped in technical requirements. Researching the Hornet purchase revealed how defense decisions balance capability with diplomacy. A chronicle of the F/A-18 Hornet's purchase and early service in the Finnish Air Force, including predecessor aircraft, specifications, political considerations and organizational structure.
