The Northern Crusades were brutal—forced conversions, cultural erasure, resistance—but both sides believed they were righteous. The challenge: honor historical complexity while making the emotional stakes visceral.

Understanding how people justify violence to themselves is different from excusing it—but it's the only way to write about war honestly.
