The Northern Crusades were brutal—forced conversions, cultural erasure, resistance—but both sides believed they were righteous. The challenge: honor historical complexity while making the emotional stakes visceral.

Researched Northern Crusades history, Finnish mythology and medieval Christian rhetoric. Wrote "Battle Hymn of Häme" using Finnish place names and pre-Christian spiritual references. Composed "Eastlands March" in the language of 13th-century crusader ideology,

Understanding how people justify violence to themselves is different from excusing it—but it's the only way to write about war honestly.
